Housing

The wooden city of Säter offers its residents a genuine provincial town environment close to shops, cafés and restaurants. In other parts of our municipality there are unique countryside environments with red Dalagård farmsteads, fields and forests which are sometimes divided where the Dal river flows forth.

In terms of recently arrived refugees, the integration department helps to find them a flat.

Language groups in the locality

Language groups vary due to immigration and emigration. The languages represented include Somali, Thai, Kirundi, Swahili, Persian, Dari, Russian, Tagalog, Arabic and Tigrinya.

Associations and organisations

Säter municipality has a rich association life. Sports associations make up the largest group with approximately 40 associations. Those who are looking for leisure pursuits also have plenty to choose from, for example fishing, shooting, scouting, folk dance, driving, working in organisations for pensioners or the handicapped etc.

The municipality has illuminated sky tracks, tennis courts, mountain bike trails, scooter tracks and ski runs as well as many miles of hiking trails and exercise paths. The urban centre of Säter has an ice rink, sports hall and swimming baths.

For young people there is also the Ungdomens Hus for young people aged between 13 and 19 years old. Here you can hang out with mates and enjoy yourself in our café, play billiards, table tennis, air hockey, TV games, parlour games, the guitar or just potter about.

What is available in the immediate area

In the city of Säter there are three food shops by the names of ICA, Konsum and Willys. There are also several small shops, clothes shops and a furniture shop, by the name of Lidéns. The Red Cross is also represented in Säter and it runs a second-hand shop called Kupan in the heart of the city centre. There are also chemist shops, a welfare centre and a social welfare office.

Childcare

We offer childcare in the form of preschools, teaching care (family day nurseries) and after-school recreation centres. Opening hours are 06:30 - 18:00, Monday to Friday.

If you are unemployed or on parental leave, the activities on offer are as follows:

  • preschool activities: 15 hours per week
  • after-school recreation centres: 10 hours per week

General preschool places are offered to children between the ages of 3 and5 years (applies from the autumn term when the child turns 3) and covers at least 525 hours a year. General preschooling is provided free of charge. The school year stretches from September to May. To cancel a place you must give 2 months' notice.

Compulsory schools and upper secondary schools

Comprehensive schools

The urban centre of Säter contains compressive schools, Kungsgårds School for years 1-6, Prästgärds School for years 1-2 and Klockar School for years 7-9, in Stora Skedvi there is Stora Skedvi School for years 1-6 and in Gustafs there is Enbacka School for years 1-6.

Upper secondary schools

Säter municipality offers upper secondary school education at the Dahlander knowledge centre which is located next to the beautiful area of Skönvik beside Lake Ljustern in Säter. The school offers five national programmes: the Social Science programme, the Natural Science programme, the Economics programme, the Technology programme and the Healthcare and Care Provision programme. The school also an introductory programme.

Health and medical care

All asylum seekers and refugees are offered a health check after arriving in Sweden. The meeting provides an introduction to how the Swedish healthcare system operates.

At the appointment you will meet a nurse and if necessary you may be accompanied by an authorised interpreter. We will talk about any previous illnesses and health issues and will go through your needs in terms of checks, treatment, samples, vaccinations and infection control.

The appointment is voluntary and free of charge.

At Säter's welfare centre there is healthcare information, a doctor's surgery, nurse clinics, discussions, midwives and antenatal care, rehabilitation, refugee health etc.

Interpreter assistance

Those who do not have a good command of the Swedish language are entitled to an interpreter in their dealings with all authorities. Säter municipality has an agreement with the interpreting service in Borlänge.

Public transport

Säter is located close to things. The airport is just 15 minutes from Säter. Both trains and trunk roads pass the city. There are also bus links with different parts of the county and other parts of Sweden.

Work and entrepreneurship

Säter municipality itself and the county council are the largest employers.

A collaboration has started between Säter municipality and the job centre aimed at trying to create new starter and introductory jobs for those who have recently settled in Sweden and people with an immigrant background.
