Practise Swedish with others

Last updated: 13 8 2018

One good way to learn Swedish is to practise with people who can already speak it.

Remember to be careful when you are going to meet someone you have only had contact with over the internet. Tell somebody where you are going and arrange to meet your online friend in a public place.

Refugee guide or language buddy

Many municipalities and voluntary organisations are involved in helping newly arrived refugees and immigrants come into contact with Swedes. The names of these activities vary: språkvän (language friend), flyktingguide (refugee guide), fadder (sponsor, coach), mentor or kompis (buddy).

Your refugee guide or language buddy can help you learn Swedish more quickly and make new contacts that can make your daily life easier. Contact your municipality and register your interest in finding a language buddy or refugee guide.

To find activities in the area where you live, search on your municipality's website or in the activity calendar.

The Activity Calendar – Find activities

"Find activities" is a search function where you can search for activities that suit you. For example, you can find associations near where you live with activities that match your interests.

You can type a search term into the search field, or you can choose a specific day, or activities in a particular area. For example, Sport, Swedish language or Culture and entertainment.

Practising with films

The films will teach you common words and phrases. You can pause and rewind the films if you want. You can also add subtitles to the film by clicking "undertexter" in the box at the bottom right of the screen.
